FALL ON ICE – LOADING DOCK
It was early morning when our client arrived at the depot, the winter air sharp and unforgiving. The unloading area was slick with ice, patches of frozen slush blending almost seamlessly into the concrete. There were no warning signs, no salt, no effort to make the area safe for workers moving heavy freight in steel-toed boots.
As he stepped down from the cab of the truck, his foot suddenly shot out from under him. He fell hard, striking his head against the frozen ground. The impact left him dazed and disoriented. In the hours that followed, doctors confirmed he had suffered a concussion.
When the depot’s manager was later shown photographs of the unloading area—thick ice, pooled water refrozen into uneven ridges—he didn’t argue. He acknowledged the conditions were unacceptable and should have been addressed long before anyone got hurt.
The case ultimately settled for $440,000.00, providing our client with compensation for his injury, medical treatment and the disruption to his life. More importantly, the depot took steps to correct the hazardous conditions, helping ensure no one else would suffer the same preventable fall.
