Metzger & Kleiner Wins Verdict in Bed Bug Litigation

Firm Wins Award against Hotel Chain for Personal Injury and Property Loss

Bed Bug LitigationMetzger & Kleiner, personal injury attorneys in Philadelphia have successfully obtained a verdict from a Philadelphia arbitration panel, securing damages for clients who were bitten by bed bugs at a Baymont Hotel & Suites in Lancaster, Ohio. We also recovered damages for the plaintiffs' personal property that was infested and had to be discarded. Bed bugs are small parasitic insects that feed exclusively on blood. They thrive in warm places, particularly in beds and bedding, and often feed without any noticeable effect. Bed bugs can cause serious rash, intense itching, allergic reactions and even psychological trauma. There are many known methods that will successfully remedy a bed bug infestation. The most effective way to get rid of them is through heat or drying. Experts say that exposure to a temperature above 120 degrees (commonly found in a dryer) for as little as two minutes will kill them. They can also be vacuumed up. There are no known pesticides that are considered effective.

How to Know If You Have Been Bitten by a Bed Bug

Most often, you won't know until the next day or so. Typically, you won't feel anything while the bed bug is feeding, but will wake up the next morning, or even a few days later, with a red welt with a dark center. Characteristically, there will be a number of bites clumped together. The bites are most common on exposed areas of your body—hands, feet, face and legs—but can appear anywhere. You may also have blisters or hives at the location of the bite.
